Welcome to SEBM | Integrating Science and Medicine

How Can We Help You Succeed?

We are a non-profit scientific society that promotes investigation in the biomedical sciences, enables career success of our members and fosters the career development of students, physician-scientists and new investigators. We accomplish this goal through publication of a peer-reviewed Journal, Experimental Biology and Medicine and cultivating a broad range of international social and research-centered events throughout the year.

Are you looking for career guidance?  Want to give back to your community of colleagues by engaging in SEBM Outreach events? Get Involved!

Activate your subscription to 100 years of articles from Experimental Biology and Medicine, the SEBM journal.

Articles represent cutting edge research as the overlapping junctions of the biological, physical and engineering sciences that impact on the health and welfare of the world's population.

Featured SEBM Scientist | Rashid Bashir, PhD

I am the Abel Bliss Professor of Engineering and faculty in Bioengineering with courtesy appointments in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Materials Science and Engineering. I am the department head of Bioengineering at UIUC.

When I was a kid I knew I liked science and engineering. I studied electrical engineering for BS through PhD. I love being a professor and I love academia but if I did not do that I would have been a physician. Well, I was part of team that conceived the idea and part of the team that is starting the first Engineering Based Medical School at UIUC – so that dream could also become a reality in an indirect way.  All my education was in Electrical Engineering. In the last semester of my PhD I took bioengineering courses and many light bulbs went on!  That’s what I want to be doing. Then I worked in the semiconductor industry for 6 years and during that time went back to school to take biology, organic chemistry and various wet labs. And then went back to academia to be a professor. I was at Purdue for 9 years and then moved to UIUC and have been here for for 9 years.

President's Address

Warren Zimmer
I am excited to begin my tenure as SEBM President.  We continue to develop new avenues to encourage trainee and early career scientist career paths.  Combined with a global outreach and the publishing of EBM, a premier journal in basic and translational sciences, the future of SEBM is bright.  I invite you to join us as we lead the integration of science and medicine.
